EDITOR-IN-CHIEF’S COLUMN
Oganessyan A. Russia – a part of Europe that failed to be one
The creation of the new European integration coincided with an intense phase of the globalization process which was a stimulating and inspiring force while the European Union had been being formed. Today the debates on the globalization crisis are held nearly simultaneously with the ones on crisis phenomena of the European integration. There is a controversy in European press: who is to blame of the globalization though having had introduced quite a lot of positive traces into the world development failed to be a universal and, the most important, - harmonizing model of the world arrangement?
CULTURAL DIPLOMACY
Boothman I. The UNESCO has chosen St. Petersburg the capital of jazz-2018
We were at the festival in Rochester in the USA. Our young guitarist went upstage and played. A was in the audience when John Abercrombie, a celebrity, turned to me and asked: “Is he your man?” – “Yes”, - I answered and he exclaimed: “You will be damned!” hat was the dialogue we had. It was a success! And there as well, at the jam-session, our trombonist, Oleg Borodin, played in a way that everyone had kicks from his techniques and originality of performance. But it isn’t enough to conquer the world. You need to grow, make your own programs, make records and play on tour.
Semyonov А. Decline of the “golden age” of rock and the birth of electronic jazz
In the end of 1960-s electronic rock simultaneously entered New York jazz stages and the ones in other USA towns giving birth to a new stile of jazz-rock or fusion. By the beginning of the 1970-s there was a sizable audience of its fans in the USA and Europe though those jazzmen still lagged behind of rock concerts as to their popularity. Amongst fusion performers bearing a considerable influence on the world jazz development should be named trumpet player Miles Davis, pianists Herby Hancock and Chic Coria, guitarists George Benson and John McLaughlin with his band «Mahavishnu», and also the groups like «Blood, Sweat and Tears» and «Weather Report». It was these promiment musicians who managed to make a break-through “fusing metric pulsation of the rock and complex improvisations of free jazz”.
Oreshina М. About some aspects of the European Union’s policy in the domain of culture
If up to 1992 issues of culture as a branch of economy had been under exclusive jurisdiction the EU member-countries, after conclusion of the Maastricht Treaty culture policy turned a prerogative of the European Union, a catalyst of the EU’s image revision and reconsideration of the idea of European unity with its popularity in a fast decline and also some counterbalance to the loss of faith in the project of European integration. The EU’s officials are improving the legal base of the development of culture and creative industry in order to make them coinciding with the current social, economic and foreign policy agenda.
